Pipe relining is the process of repairing broken, leaking or blocked pipes and drains. Relining involves inserting a textile liner coated with epoxy resin into the broken section of drain. This then hardens into an inner pipe which is just a few mm thick. The process forms a strong and long lasting bond to the pipe and as it is structurally sound. It can also restore pipes where sections are missing or have separated. In short, we can complete the drain relining in under a day, so your drains can be back to their normal use in no time.

What are the benefits of relining broken pipes?

  • In some cases, pipe relining can be a cheaper option than digging up and replacing the existing pipes.
  • As we’re not digging dirt or breaking through concrete, it creates a lot less mess!
  • If the pipe in question is located under a tiled floor such as in a kitchen, it saves having to replace the tiled floor.
  • Doesn’t affect the structural integrity of buildings or infrastructure.
  • The process of pipe relining can usually be finished in under a day.
  • The end result is that it is actually stronger than new PVC pipe. It is in fact 10x stronger!
  • Pipe Relining can eliminate tree root problems in the relined section of the drain – for good.
  • Pipe Relining is Council approved.

RTL Trades’ Pipe Relining Process

Step 1

An onsite consultation and CCTV inspection of the drainage system with our drainage experts. We can then locate the damaged or broken pipes.

Step 2

Our drain experts prepare the drain by removing any tree roots. This is done by cleaning the drain with a high pressure water cleaner (known as a jetta) to remove any debris.

Step 3

Repair the pipe by relining or patching the pipe. The resin needs to cure for a minimum of 6 to 8 hours.

Step 4

Carrying out a final CCTV camera inspection of the newly relined pipe, we record a video of the newly relined pipe.

Step 5

The Relining Report, complete with before and after CCTV footage is prepared for you.

Will tree roots be able to break the drain or pipe once relined?

Because the end result of pipe relining is that it creates a joint-less end product, this ensures there is nowhere for the tree roots to break into the drain. The relined section of pipe is guaranteed against tree roots in the newly relined section of drain.

What size pipe will pipe relining work on?

Our RTL Trades technicians carry out pipe relining on drains and sewerage pipes sized between 50mm to 150mm. The pipe relining product we use is able to handle up to 90 degree bends and small changes in pipe diameter.

My sewer is badly damaged. What damage can be repaired and relined?

Pipe relining can repair any damage to the pipe, even if the pipe is missing in sections. This includes pipes that are damaged or otherwise defective due to: tree roots, cracks, old age, dislodgement and erosion. We are able to reline meters of the pipe at a time, or simply do a patch repair to a small section.

Is the process of relining the pipe disruptive?

As we are not digging to uncover the pipes like regular pipe replacements, there is little to no disruption to the surface, making the process trenchless. The drain however, cannot be used for approximately 6 to 8 hrs whilst the resin sets. If you compare this to traditional pipe repair, which can take several days to complete and includes a lot of heavy machinery, noise and mess. Pipe Relining is a much quicker process in comparison.

Of course, our Relining technician and/or our office will keep you updated during the process and completion timings.

What is the lifespan of a relined pipe?

The beauty of Pipe relining is a permanent solution. The life span of our material is over 50 years, which is actually longer than most modern PVC pipes!

How much does pipe relining cost?

After assessing and inspecting the pipe or drain with a CCTV camera, we are then able to provide you with a quote. It’s quoted on a case by case basis, we’re not able to quote on relining a pipe sight unseen.

Are there any types of pipes that can't be relined?

We can reline any type of pipe, from terracotta to PVC, cast iron or asbestos. Relining is a great solution, even if there is a large gap in the pipe as it will seal the gap. If the condition of the pipe is too far gone, we may have to replace it.

During our initial CCTV Inspection, we may need to clean the pipe. Our pipe relining technician will be up front and honest on our best steps.

Are relined pipes safe for the environment?

Absolutely – the new seamless pipe prevents infiltration and exfiltration and restores structural integrity of the pipe. Pipe relining eliminates joints – which can allow roots to enter the pipe and eventually weaken the pipe affected. The resin we use is environmentally safe and will not harm the environment.
